OtterBox Impact Case for iPhone 3G, 3GS (Black) Reviews

I’m about as happy as I could be with the Impact case. Carrying around a slippery, glass-fronted device, I was primarily looking for a case that would provide good energy dissipation in the inevitable event that I drop-kick it across a room when fumbling for keys. As such, an unyielding hardshell case just wasn’t ideal. The fitment, bracing, and silicone material of the Impact are a well-thought-out means of limiting shock intensity (although I thankfully haven’t tested it to any considerable extent).

The Impact fits the phone snugly, provides a good textured grip for the hand, and doesn’t drown out the mic and earpiece like poorly-fitted units. All slides and buttons are easily accessible – perhaps even more so than without case since my hand isn’t slipping all over the glossy shell. Relatedly, the Impact adds very little size to the phone and weighs next to nothing.

The included screen protector works great too – I’d heard of rainbow refractions and a slightly-milky appearance, but cleaning the surface well beforehand and working carefully resulted in a crystal-clear application. Can’t tell it’s even in place. No complaints on that front.

I could do without the circular port on the back of the case, but it does nothing to harm structural integrity and it displays my MS sticker effectively. It will certainly do the same for the Apple logo, however! The thickness of the silicone protects it from most direct scratchin’ contact.

My second option in terms of cases was the Otterbox Defender, but I felt the Impact would suffice for day-to-day protection, and thus far this has certainly proven to be true.

I work for the Fire Department and was looking for a rugged case that could stand up to the abuse I was expecting to put it through. After purchasing this product, I am confident my phone is fully protected from the elements. I will say, it does make the product a little bulky, I tend to put my phone in my pocket and not wear it on a belt clip. It’s bulky but doable. It was a good purchase and I’m glad I bought it. One thing I will mention about it, is that it didn’t come with instructions on how to put it in the case, and it literally took me about 15mins. to figure it out. Also, after market car charges and docking stations will not work with this case because the connection is too deep in the case. Knowing those two things, I would still buy it.

I am not usually one to leave review comments… but I certainly read a BUNCH of reviews on cases for my iPhone 3G. THANK YOU to all those who wrote reviews and helped me pick the Otterbox Defender case! This case is awesome. VERY durable, all functions are accessible… and yes, the oil slicking effect is sometimes present, but easily fixed.

The ONLY issue I had when I installed the case was that immediately after I installed the case, almost 95% of all people I talked to said they heard an echo every time they spoke (you know, when you say something and a second later you hear it in your ear piece… ANNOYING!).

I was bummed because the case is built like a tank and already saved my phone from a 6′ drop onto the asphalt in the rain. Though, I decided to remove the felt pieces that cover the mic and ear pieces since they are only there to prevent possible drops of water hitting those phone components directly. Once I removed those pieces, not one person complains of hearing the echo anymore! Strange, but it worked… so I wanted to pass it on.

The echo was the ONLY issue I had with this case… it’s the best case I could find and WELL worth the money. I recommend it to everyone I see with an iPhone now

This is a fine case that will protect your iPhone better than most other cases.

Pros:

-Very durable. I would feel very safe using it for outdoor activities like biking, running, hiking, skiing (but it’s not waterproof), camping, etc.

-You can use all buttons on the phone.

-Durable belt clip has an extra feature that makes it easy to attach to your belt.

Cons:

-Very, very difficult to detach the case from the belt holster.

-The rubber/silicone outer cover often gets bunched up when you attach it to the belt holster.

-Most importantly, the built in screen protector gets splotchy and greasy easily, almost as if there’s condensation or liquid between the screen protector and the iPhone’s screen. The only way to remove it is to take the phone out of the case and clean it off which is a nuisance.

Conclusion: It doesn’t make a very good “everyday” case. I only recommend purchasing it if you’re an avid outdoorsman. For everyday use, find another case.

This feels really great in your hand, the texture is perfect. All relevant controls are still easily accessible. It doesn’t really cover the top (power button) or bottom of the device (docking area), but this will certainly help to a degree but unlikely to save the day if you dropped this on concrete. The fact that it is made of polycarbonate though, known for its supple yet high impact absorptive qualities, is somewhat reassuring. But for a slim-fitting case that provides basic protection against scuffs and scrapes, etc. plus a better grip over the iPhone’s glossy back, this is great. I ordered a screen protector as well which I highly recommend – my last phones screen was scratched by some keys in my pocket.

So you need a bit of protection for your 3G? This one fits the bill. For around you can’t go wrong. On top of a slim, sleak fit that will not fall off or slip around it was shipped and received by me in 3 days. Almost instant gratification. Only caution I have is don’t be fooled by the word “soft” in the description. Silicone is soft, this is not although it does have a bit of a non-slip feel. It does make the phone easier to hold and I am sure it will add more slip resistance capabilites when you leave the phone on your dashboard or any other flat surface. The best part of this case is that the designer took into account all of the buttons, toggles and switches on the phone including the camera lens so all of these are adequately exposed and ready for easy use. The fit is superb and the slim design does not detract from the lines of the phone at all. As you may have read in other reviews the only issue is the interference with a screen protector. Due to the tight fit and the way it wraps around the face of the phone it does curl the sides of the screen protector slightly causing air bubbles to appear but this is easily remedied by a simple trim of each side of the screen protector. No more than 1/32″ from each side will do. I used a paper cutter to get a good straight cut. If you want to protect your iPhone but retain the sleek look and feel and fit into a holster, this is the one for you.
